Georges-Émile Eberhard founded the workshop in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1887, initially producing pocket-watch movements and finished watches for export. From the early 20th century the brand became known for chronograph watchmaking, supplying military chronographs to the Italian Royal Navy and developing a long-running technical relationship with Italian markets that continues to define the brand's commercial identity today.
Eberhard's most historically important chronograph references include the Extra-Fort (a 1940s-60s chronograph in robust Swiss case construction with column-wheel movement, often considered one of the most under-appreciated mid-century Swiss chronos), the Contograf, and military chronographs supplied to Italian and other European armed forces through the inter-war period. The brand also produced specialty watches including the Tazio Nuvolari series honouring the Italian racing legend - a long-running collaboration with the Nuvolari family estate that has anchored Eberhard's modern commercial identity.
Today Eberhard & Co. operates from La Chaux-de-Fonds with Italian-anchored ownership and a catalogue centred on the Tazio Nuvolari Grand Prix chronograph, the Extra-Fort reissue, the asymmetric Chrono 4 (with four chronograph sub-dials arranged horizontally rather than the conventional tri-compax layout - a Eberhard signature), and the 8 Jours 8-day power reserve collection. Movements are largely modified ETA / Sellita with chronograph variants based on Valjoux 7750 / Sellita SW500, and selected COSC chronometer references. Annual production is small (estimated 15,000-25,000 pieces) and the brand remains a quiet but highly-regarded heritage Swiss chronograph specialist.
