RECOMMENDED READING: Safe deposit boxes aren’t so safe

It’s long been a staple of watch collecting advice and lore - don’t keep your watches in your sock drawer or consumer-grade safe, keep them in a safe deposit box. Well, that old adage is looking a little stretched on the basis of a recent article in The New York Times, which recounts the harrowing … ContinuedThe post RECOMMENDED READING: Safe deposit boxes aren’t so safe appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

Editorial: The Pursuit of Greatness in Vintage Complications

There is no real point in collecting anything unless for the sake of beauty. The moment I see a watch for the first time is always the most crucial. The pieces that ended up entering the collection always touched me viscerally when I first saw them.  Over time, almost unconsciously, as the collection took shape, the watches not only have a uniformity of standard and taste, but also reflect an intuition distinctly my own.  Taste is the developed perception of aesthetics unique to every collector, while standard pertains to quality and rarity. In the big picture, “beauty” – in both tangible and abstract terms – has come to encompass all three: aesthetics, quality, and rarity.  The watches I crave and seek, be it the best examples of the most important references of the most important manufactures, or unique “time-only” examples of incredible quality and design, must be eternal in their beauty. In this article we delve into a few complicated watches close to my heart.  Passing time cannot affect an object that is truly beautiful. Just look at two of the most important Patek Philippe landmark complicated references: ref. 1518, the first perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatch in the world, and ref. 3448, the first self-winding, perpetual calendar wristwatch. Their designs are perfectly balanced, timeless, as fresh today as when they were first introduced – in the early 1940s and the early 1960s, respectively.  For years, the daunting challenge had been in ...

Can’t score that Nautilus or Pepsi? Here’s 6 watches you could buy instead

These are the conversations we all keep having lately. Much like our beloved Sandra Lane, I’m equally sick of the steel Rolex and Patek hype that refuses to die off (at least for now), and every time I hear of the obscene premium that people are still willing to pay for either the Nautilus 5711 … ContinuedThe post Can’t score that Nautilus or Pepsi? HANDS-ON: The Rolex Milgauss Z-Blue – the rebel Rolex

Even though many look to Rolex as a steadfast, unchanging bastion of the watch world, there are some definite outliers in the field. Bejewelled GMT-Masters, leopard Daytonas (which have now given way to unobtainium rainbow Daytona). These models are so uncommon and special that they do not really skew the public’s view of Rolex as a manufacturer … ContinuedThe post HANDS-ON: The Rolex Milgauss Z-Blue – the rebel Rolex appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

INTRODUCING: Time+Tide’s NOW Magazine Edition 1, now available in the shop

It was the kind of unanswerable question only a toddler could ask. We were sitting in a sun-warmed café window-seat early one morning, and the moon was still visible in the blue sky. While I sipped my latte, and my eldest daughter, Indie, smeared as much of her berry smoothie on her upper lip as … ContinuedThe post INTRODUCING: Time+Tide’s NOW Magazine Edition 1, now available in the shop appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

Well, here we are. The ‘sky’s-the-limit’/‘mortgage-the-house’ level of watch. And if you’re going to drop that sort of coin on something that (you’d hope) tells the time, SIHH is the place to do it. There were some truly exceptional offerings at the top end of the table and – just quietly – we definitely picked … ContinuedThe post VIDEO: Our favourite watches of SIHH 2018 – part 4, $30,000 and above  appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

SPOTTED! BY AG: Dispatch 8, May 2017

The past few months have been so crazy that we split last month’s dispatch into two. As Basel wrapped up, I headed back to the great city of London for round two. Apparently I wasn’t sick of looking at watches yet. Silas’s Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar 3940G Whilst roaming the streets of Clerkenwell, I took the … ContinuedThe post SPOTTED! This, friends, is the big one. Sure, we’ve kept half an eye on the Golden Globes, the SAG Awards, the BAFTAs and the rest. VIDEO: Who will win ‘Apples to Apples’ episode 1? Featuring Frederique Constant and Baume & Mercier

This video series was born out of frustration. We were so sick of being asked to compare “apples to apples” (A2A) when it came to watch recommendations that we went and created a whole new segment – and a new concept for us – to get on the front foot to meet the demand. Like two very … ContinuedThe post VIDEO: Who will win ‘Apples to Apples’ episode 1? Featuring Frederique Constant and Baume & Mercier appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.
