Revolution
A conservative estimate is that I saw 600 watches in my 3½ days at BaselWorld. When asked to choose my three favourites, all I could do was groan, “Impossible!” There were so many spectacular new pieces – and I don’t mean just the silly-priced stuff – that I can’t even devise a mental “filter”. Do […]

Watches are a constant reminder of our own mortality. Every tick we hear, will never come back and inevitable bring us closer to the end, whatever that may be. Even one of the most successful add campaigns ever launched by a watch brand is referring to this; You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You […]

We visited Chronoswiss yesterday in their spacious, light-filled new stand at BaselWorld 2013 and had an opportunity to view some stunning new additions to their collection: here’s a first look at the Artist’s Collection watches, with flinqué enamel dials. Flinqué enamel is a technique in which a metal surface decorated with engine-turning (guilloché) is then […]

I own a handful of real watches. When I say real, what I mean is luxury timepieces; and while a massive watch safe isn’t something that might fit my budget or collection (I don’t own that many watches worth that kind of protection), I believe that there are watch aficionados (like my boss, Wei) with […]

Arnold & Son was once a venerable name in English watchmaking. Perhaps with these new watches, they are coming back? Read on to find out more. Arnold & Son in London circa 1787-1790. An old firm indeed…very little is published about their early works. But the name is now owned by a Swiss based company,Read More

Mechanical oscillators like the pendulum and balance wheel are what actually tell time - and today’s latest experiments by some of watchmaking’s most daring researchers are paving the way for the watches of tomorrow At their most basic, any time-measuring device - whether it’s a longcase pendulum clock, or the most sophisticated cesium fountain […]

Watchmaking companies do not often make interesting mechanical watches for ladies. Precious few do. Amongst them some do justice for the ladies…I count Lange, JLC, and Parmigiani amongst the few. I show today, a beautiful piece in the current Parmigiani collection…the Kalpa Donna The bezel is still studded with diamonds, for some bling…we gotta haveRead More

Continuing on the series on affordable watches. This watch was a minor sensation at www.timezone some years ago (um…13-14 years ago…) and achieved a cult status there. I have owned this piece for almost that long…quite a nice watch, Unitas movement, decently finished. Beautiful dial, with raised printed Arabic numerals with quite strong superluminova. IRead More

Some readers have written to tell me that the watches I feature are almost always very expensive, as they usually are top range luxury timepieces. Worn & Wound
If you had told me a few years ago that much of what I’d be doing at Worn & Wound in terms of new release coverage would be writing about mother of pearl and stone dial executions like a beat reporter at small town paper assigned to the high school basketball team, I probably would not have believed it. But here we are, multiple years into a trend that does not really seem to be letting up. It started with a resurfacing of high end vintage watches with exotic stone dials, moved to bigger brands capitalizing on the hype, shifted to smaller makers and microbrands offering impossibly affordable options, and now we’re back at the high end, and seeing brands looking for new ways to combine stones and materials in novel ways. Last week, Czapek announced a pair of watches that make particularly interesting use of mother of pearl. The Antarctique S Ice Cloud is, at a glance, simply an Antarctique with a mother of pearl dial. But there’s some special artisanal work that has gone into the making of this particular dial, which has been conceived as a “poetic interpretation of cloud formations in an icy landscape.” The dial is constructed from a piece of white mother of pearl that is cut to just 0.2mm thick – the height of two sheets of paper, according to Czapek. A varnish is then applied to the underside of the mother of pearl surface using a horsehair brush, which creates a cloudlike pattern that is unique to each dial. The varnish itself is tinted blue, and the art...

General everyday contact with magnets isn’t going to cause your beloved wristwatch any real harm, but overdoses of magnetism may still present a problem, causing erratic timing and even stoppage altogether. Watchmaker Ashton Tracy explains what to do.

Worn & Wound
With our first year behind us (thanks for all the well wishes!), we’re back with episode 53 of A Week In Watches with new releases from Tissot, Breguet, Seiko & more. One of our favorite watches of the summer (thus far) has come from Tissot, and it’s a forged carbon regatta timer called the Sideral. Yes, it’s a callback to something they’ve done in the past, and yes, it’s still awesome. With a carbon case and Powermatic 80 movement, this is a ton of watch (and funk) for about $1,100, see more here. Elsewhere, Breguet gives us a first look at new Type 20 and Type XX watches, with a stunning new movement and a date window that may leave you scratching your head. Head to the video on YouTube to give us your take on the date, as well as the rest of the watches in this week’s episode. Rounding things out, we’ve got news of a new Pontos S Diver from Maurice Lacroix, which is a welcome site from the brand, though we wonder if it could have done with a slight bit of modernization? Speaking of, Seiko has modernized their King Seiko with a trimmer case architecture and a new movement which brings a date to the regular production modern King Seiko. Finally, IWC has brought the silver dial back to the Mark Pilot watch and it works about as well as you’d expect, which is to say, pretty damn well. This week’s episode was brought to you by the Windup Watch Shop. For an excellent and ever-growing catalog of watches, straps, clocks, and more, head to windupwatchshop.com....
