WHO WORE IT BEST? Alexander Skarsgard vs Tom Brady and the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph

Whisper it quietly, but earlier this week was Alexander Skarsgard really responsible for instigating the unthinkable and taking down Waystar RoyCo? Of all the formidable actors in Hollywood, it speaks volumes of the 45-year-old Swede that Succession’s head honchos cast him as GoJo CEO Lukas Mattson, believing he was best equipped to not only match Brian … ContinuedThe post WHO WORE IT BEST? FRIDAY WIND DOWN: Festive cheer, a broken arm and a very drunken watch buy…

Following another COVID-blighted year, we’ve all learned to appreciate certain aspects of life that lockdown deprived us of. The joy of things like pub gardens, schools being open and vaguely regular haircuts. But the most sorely missed of all was the life-affirming pleasure of catching up with old mates. All of which made last night’s … ContinuedThe post FRIDAY WIND DOWN: Festive cheer, a broken arm and a very drunken watch buy… appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

HANDS-ON: The Oris Rectangular has all the right angles and a welcome pop of colour

During Dubai Watch Week, as I found myself entertained by the travels of deputy editor Zach Blass, I found it a bit difficult to keep up with all the releases. Dozens of watches seemed to cross my screen on those late New York nights. In all my perusing, there was one watch that still managed … ContinuedThe post HANDS-ON: The Oris Rectangular has all the right angles and a welcome pop of colour appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

Available in the Shop: Flip it and Reverse it, two takes on the iconic Reverso

Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Reverso has been an icon for 90 years. Not only does this masterfully distinctive watch have an uncommon shape, it’s also got its signature move - the reversing case. While this watch these days is most commonly seen as something dressy, the Reverso has sporty roots and, as these two examples from WatchFinder & Co demonstrate, can project vastly different moods.

How does this 1982 Seiko still manage to look so damn good and blemish-free?

At first glance this looks like a fairly good condition vintage Seiko manufactured in the early 80s, a ref 5933-5080, with only a couple of hairline scratches betraying what may otherwise present as New Old Stock that’s never been sold at retail. But the super crisp case lines and practically unblemished surfaces are not due … ContinuedThe post How does this 1982 Seiko still manage to look so damn good and blemish-free? appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

A host of savvy celebs are snapping up this super-accessible and inexpensive watch

People often bang on about the corrosive effects of fame and fortune. Purported negatives include paparazzi harassment, endless selfie requests from fans, not to mention the apparent obligation to give your child some god-awful name in a misguided attempt to express your “creativity”. On the positive side, however, enjoying a massive public profile does seem to … ContinuedThe post A host of savvy celebs are snapping up this super-accessible and inexpensive watch appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

Watches and the celebration of outer space have a long and intertwined history, most notably Omega with their Speedmaster joining NASA’s trip to the moon. But before all that, the famed “Space Race” between the Soviet Union and the United States was an international battle to reach the stars first. Highlights: George Daniels and Ralph Ellison at Phillips’ New York Auction

While the most high profile lot at Phillips’ upcoming New York sale is surely the Patek Philippe Nautilus ref. 5711/1A-018 made for the 170th anniversary of Tiffany & Co., there are a handful more watches in the sale that are notable for different reasons. One is unquestionably the tourbillon pocket watch George Daniels made for Edward Hornby in 1971 for its sheer horological merit. And another notable watch sits at the opposite end of the spectrum in terms of horological quality – it’s a standard Omega Speedmaster Moon Watch – but it is historically important, having been owned by Ralph Ellison, the novelist best known for Invisible Man. The 2021 New York Watch Auction takes place on December 11 1 (lots 1-81) and December 12 (lots 82-165) at 432 Park Avenue, New York. The rest of the catalogue is available here. Lot 102: George Daniels The Edward Hornby Tourbillon Pocket Watch One of eight similar watches, all equipped with a one-minute tourbillon, this was made in 1971 for Edward Hornby, a lawyer who collected watches. Made during the period of 1969 to 1973, the eight watches were the first of Daniels’ own creations. Almost all were made for English collectors, save for one that Daniels made for his daughter, Sarah Jane, and another for German chemist Thomas Engel. Named after its first owner like all the other watches in the series of eight, the Hornby watch is typical Daniels, and consequently, also very much Breguet in style. Entirely hand made by Daniels,...
