At the end of last year, we made “resolutions,” and while I forgot we had done that until writing this post, I stayed pretty true to what I had said. I wanted to consolidate, focus, and potentially go big on a watch for my 40th birthday. I had to do the first to make the last part come true, and the second just kind of happened naturally. My tastes have changed quite a bit over the last two years, perhaps starting with the Bel Canto (shameless review plug). As such, I find myself drawn to a specific type of indie watch more and more, and frankly, I find most releases from large brands kind of boring. While that might be more of a “it’s not you, it’s me” kind of thing, I don’t see it changing anytime soon. But, back to my birthday, turning 40 was something I ignored until it was upon me. I’m not a big birthday celebration guy, but 40 felt different; it’s a bit of a terrifying number, thus it needed to be marked meaningfully. And, well, I can’t turn down a good opportunity to horologically spoil myself. However, to go big, I had to let several things go. While I’ll avoid the details, all said and done, I sold six watches and traded one, though in fairness, not all before making my purchase (you know how it is). Tactile Turn’s Latest Seasonal Release If you read this column regularly, you know that we’re huge fans of Tactile Turn’s regular seasonal releases. There are special runs of their pens, often in whimsical colorways with fun themes, that aren’t limited, per se, but have open order windows for a given period of time, allowing anyone to get in on a pen that feels special. The newest release is actually a pair of pens under their side click platform, “Day” and “Night” versions of “Vice.” According to the brand, the inspiration here comes from the synthwave aesthetic often associated with Miami Vice (both the classic TV show and the underrated Michael Mann film starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrel). From the beginning of 1953 to the end of 1954, Rolex had perhaps the most productive and impactful period that any watchmaker had ever managed in a two-year stretch. The Explorer, the gold standard of adventure-oriented luxury watches, debuted in the summer of 1953 and the first Submariner, the quintessential diver’s watch, was manufactured that same year. The Submariner’s public debut wasn’t until 1954 at the Basel Watch Fair, but it wasn’t the only trendsetting Rolex watch the Crown released that year: the other was the original GMT-Master, the dual-time travel watch against which all others are measured. Photo: Matthew Bain We all are familiar with the three iconic Oyster Perpetual timepieces above, but few may be aware that Rolex released another tool watch in 1953, whose production not only preceded that of the Submariner and GMT-Master but whose signature design feature influenced the look of both. That watch is the Rolex Turn-o-Graph, the first serially produced Rolex tool watch equipped with a rotating bezel that could be used for timing intervals. (To be thorough, it should be noted that it was not the very first Rolex watch with such a feature: the Zerographe Ref. 3346, made way back in 1937, takes that honor, along with the distinction of being the first Rolex watch with a movement made in-house - with a flyback chronograph, no less. We’ve long known Stallone to be a watch guy, and he’s perhaps best known for wearing Panerais on screen and in public. Many, in fact, credit him with popularizing the brand in the mainstream as it rose to prominence twenty years ago. But Sly’s collection, as it turns out, goes way deeper than Panerai. Among the watches that will be auctioned are timepieces from Audemars Piguet, Cartier, and Rolex, as well as several Patek Philippes. The most notable of the Pateks, without a doubt, is a 6300G-010 Grandmaster Chime, the brand’s most complicated wristwatch. Stallone’s example is the first ever to be sold at auction. Now, in addition to silver, blue, black, and salmon dials, Vulcain has just launched a new model in a verdant green with silver subdials. UK based auction house Gardiner Houlgate is about to auction nearly 500 lots in a massive auction, and there’s almost certainly something for everyone.
