Fears is a favorite among many of us here at Worn & Wound, so we were excited to hear Fernando dig into why and how this watch landed in his collection. The New Spring Novelties from Fears

Revitalized British brand Fears has made many waves in the independent watch scene in recent years, building a reputation for vintage-inspired timepieces backed by robust modern movements, and distinctive styling. Now, Fears releases their first pilot’s watch in 180 years, alongside several new iterations of core collection favorites, to round out a slate of spring novelties that carry forward the brand’s unique combination of youthful innovation and historically-informed aesthetics. First up is that pilot watch: named for Filton, a town neighboring the Fears homebase in Bristol that is largely known for housing the Bristol Aeroplane Company, the Brunswick 40 ‘Filton’ aims to capture the adventurous air of early flight. The Filton sits within the Brunswick 40mm line, giving it a recognizable silhouette with added functionality. A date window at 6 o’clock introduces the complication to the Brunswick 40 line for the first time, and the Raven Black sunburst and Squadron Green gradient dial options evoke cockpit instruments and vintage squadron markings respectively. Applied numerals in Fears’ own ‘Edwin’ typeface hammer home the early 20th century look, with a triangle at 12 o’clock to promote legibility. Sword pipette hands round out the design, with the Raven Black model also featuring a “ghost effect’ with matching black hand centers. Following collaborations with Rexhep Rexhepi and Kari Voutilainen, Louis Vuittion turns to De Bethune’s Denis Flageollet for its biggest independent collaboration to date, both literally and figuratively. The release spans two timekeepers - the first is the LVDB-03 GMT Louis Varius, a heat-blued titanium wristwatch that can be wound and set by the LVDB-03 Sympathique Louis Varius, an ambitious métiers d’art Sympathique clock. Initial thoughts Having worked on Sympathique clocks for Breguet during his spell at Techniques Horlogères Appliquées (THA) in the 1990s, Mr Flageollet revisits the concept on his own terms. De Bethune is one of the few independent brands with its own clockmaking workshop, which is a testament to Mr Flageollet’s experience gained at THA. The Sympathique clock is finely wrought, with several charming artistic flourishes embodying De Bethune’s house style with a generous use of blued titanium. While this Sympathique arguably is a historical tribute rather than state-of-the art, it is nonetheless easier to use than its antecedents, with a simplified docking process that doesn’t require the watch’s strap to be removed. In terms of usability, this Sympathique is arguably the most advanced to date; moreover, both clocks can be paired with any of the watches in the series, an interchangeability underlining the precision of make that was absent in historical Sympathique clocks. Fears Unveils their Limited Edition Release for British Watchmakers’ Day

For the third year in a row, Fears will introduce a limited edition watch to be sold exclusively at British Watchmakers’ Day, which this year occurs on March 7. It continues a theme established in 2024 of using 925 Sterling Silver for the case material, a flourish that feels special and, somehow, quintessentially British. This year’s limited edition piece, the Brunswick 40 1846 Edition, debuts a new case design as well as a special lacquer dial made just for this year’s LE. It’s also an anniversary piece, as this year marks the 180th anniversary of brand founder Edwin Fear opening his first watchmaking workshop in Bristol in 1846.  This Brunswick 40 case is polished on all sides, taking full advantage of the natural lustre of 925 sterling silver. It’s also engraved with the initials of Nicholas Bowman-Scargill, the brand’s managing director, which is a nod to a tradition started with the first silver pocket watch made by Edwin Fear. Additionally, like previous British Watchmakers’ Day editions in silver, the crown is set with a single diamond to note that the case is constructed from a precious metal.  Diving into the specs, it’s worth noting that the case of this Brunswick 40 is very slightly thinner than the standard issue version. Per the spec sheet, this LE measures in at 11.1mm tall, while the typical Brunswick 40 is 11.9mm in height. Fears and Ace Jewelers Release a Limited Edition Paying Tribute to the De Stijl Movement

Much like art cars, art watches are often divisive; those who favor function tend to dismiss them as wrist candy, while the stylish or art-forward tend to snap them up as fast as possible. So, when a microbrand with a reputation for both mechanical and design prowess decides to make an art watch-in this case, a watch inspired by a recognizable artist-it gets everyone a little giddy, and a little nervous. Enter the newest Fears and Ace Jewelers’ collaboration: the Brunswick 38 De Stijl Edition. Put forth as a partnership between Dutch artistry (as represented by the Amsterdam-based Ace Jewelers) and British refinement (courtesy of Bristol’s own Fears), the De Stijl Edition is inspired by the Dutch artistic movement of the same name, and based on the Fears Brunswick 38 platform. The De Stijl movement was founded by Theo van Doesburg in the early twentieth-century, and its most well-known artist is Piet Mondriaan, whose work has clearly played a large role in the conception of the De Stijl Edition; more on that below.  First, though, let’s take a look at the basics of the Brunswick 38. It features a 38mm stainless steel cushion case that Fears fans will recognize instantly, thanks to now-iconic design elements like the onion-shaped crown and lack of flat surfaces. Studio Underd0g and Fears Team Up for Another Cocktail Inspired LE, the 02SERIES Manhattan

By definition, a heritage brand needs to be something of a stalwart within its industry. By remaining conservative, it can uphold certain design vernaculars of a bygone era, thereby ensuring both its own heritage status and the traditions with which its industry hinges upon. This is, of course, the case with many centuries-old watch brands and, perhaps, what you’d think of the British brand Fears, which was founded in 1846. Instead, what we see within the context of its revival in 2016 is a brand that builds upon it’s heritage to produce something appreciative of its archive, yes, but is not handcuffed to its own tradition. I mention this all to say that a Studio Under0g x Fears collaboration excites me greatly. First and foremost because I’m a fan of Mad Men and its cocktail-inspired release, the Manhattan, is eye-catching enough for me. But also because it shows the forward-thinkingness of a brand that is hellbent on bringing Britain’s oldest watchbrands into the 21st century with one of its youngest. The Manhattan isn’t the first collaboration between these two brands. Earlier this year, the 02SERIES Gimlet enjoyed a limited release at British Watchmakers’ Day in March. Now, we see a similar event-exclusive release, this time for WindUp Watch Fair NYC next month, where the limited production will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis. With its amber-colored dial and steel cushion case, the Manhattan definitely lives up to the urbanity of its namesak...
