Glashutte Original’s factory is almost right next door to Lange’s at Altenberger Strasse in Glashutte. The brands do share some common origins, both pointing to Ferdinand Aldophe Lange. Amongst the watches GO produces, some are very nice, but none nicer to my eyes than the Pano Retro Graph…a beautiful movement… The movement is nicely laidRead More

As a followup, this is a detailed look at the movement, showing the salient features of the quite excellent finish: Zooming in on the escapement: The entire esacapement, can be unscrewed at the ends of the bridge, and removed. Continuing on the series on affordable watches. This watch was a minor sensation at www.timezone some years ago (um…13-14 years ago…) and achieved a cult status there. I have owned this piece for almost that long…quite a nice watch, Unitas movement, decently finished. Beautiful dial, with raised printed Arabic numerals with quite strong superluminova. IRead More

The latest iteration of The Freak…with Rolf’s signature on the plate attached to the dial at 6. The plate releases the lock on the bezel, which also serves as device to set the time. The watch is amazing in simplicity…no crown…set the hands by turning the bezel. Wind the watch by turning the rear bezel.Read More

I am quite fascinated by the world of the Grand Seiko. Here is a real atypical watch manufacturer. Hard core to the bone…and yet not manufacturing at the traditional heart of watchmaking in Switzerland. Their superb factory and workshops, especially the Micro Artisans Studio in Shiojiri, where I visited some years ago, make wonderful products.Read More

Kari Voutilainen’s simple time only watch…a la Dufour’s Simplicity is the Observertoire. I had the oppportunity to photograph this masterpiece in Motiers in January, after the SIHH when I visited with some good friends. The dial shows great restraint, and looks extremely handsome. The rose engine turned dial is made onsite at Kari’s premises. IRead More

The Hamilton Watch Company is one with an illustrious history. Founded in Lancaster, Pensylvania in the US in 1892, nearly 120 years ago, it stood right at the forefront of high precision watchmaking. They focussed in those days principally in the production of railroad watches. Pocket watches which often with two timezones though sometimes onlyRead More

Debethune always have interesting things to show at the periphery of SIHH. Housed once again in one of the function rooms at the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Geneva, David Zaneta and his genius partner Denis Flageolet have come up with yet another amazing crop of products. As usual I had the pleasure of beingRead More

Urwerk is always amazing. The watches they make are not strictly for telling the time, but avant garde sculptures which mesmerises because of the way it reminds one of science fiction creations. One can only imagine the designers at Urwerk: the talented Martin Frei and Felix Baumgartner have spent (or mis-spent) their youth marvelling atRead More

As you have discovered…I am taking a short break on this blog (not taking any breaks making photographs) on watch photography. Rest assured that watches will return soon, in aboutRead More

The Richard Lange Referenzuhr…reference time. A simple complication to the Richard Lange series of chronometers. Two significant changes to the regular Richard Lange: move from central seconds hand to a large subsidiary seconds hand. And the provision of the ability to reset this seconds hand at will, without having to stop the movement. This featureRead More

The Urwerk White Shark…limited Edition in 12 pieces, especially for The Hour Glass and Chronopassion. A closer look at the time indication mechanism. The red numeral is also the limited edition number…12 examples, so allows each watch to be individualised with its limited edition number in red on the hour indicator. Nice touch. A closerRead More

The newest member of the Lange 1 family is the automatic Daymatic. Lange used this as the teaser for SIHH10, and indeed in this forum, Edwin has posted the press releases of the watch. Here in full glory: At first glance looks like the regular Lange 1. But its almost a mirror image of theRead More

This year’s novelties at SIHH 2010 finally made it to our shores. I attended an evening hosted by Vacheron Constantin…great food, wonderful company, and of course, fine watches. The Historique Ultra-Fine 1968 in a square case, and the Historique Ultra-fine 1955 in the round case. The watches are truly thin, the 1956’s hand wound movementRead More

Very interesting watch by JLC. Dual train, one running a constantly running foudroyante hand…furiously spinning in 1.6s steps at the rate of 1 revolution per second…mesmerising to watch. Here are our watchscape photographs of the Duomètre à Quantième Lunaire. As usual, images will open up 1920 pixels wide as wallpapers when you click on them.Read More
