This is the identity of the average Rolex owner (they’re not who you might expect)ww

Off the top of your head, what’s your mental picture of a Rolex owner? Some cigar-chomping big-shot in an oak-panelled office? A thrusting young professional who delights in his watch as a conspicuous status-signifier? Or simply a lover of fine watches who appreciates the formidable consistency and build quality of the Crown? The reason I … ContinuedThe post This is the identity of the average Rolex owner (they’re not who you might expect)ww appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

FRIDAY WIND DOWN: A one of a kind visit to London and a pit-stop at The Wing with Bremont

I’m pushing through the jet-lag, fresh off the plane back in New York City after a week in London. I only wish I could have stayed longer, but fortunately the days I was there were packed with fun and watches – 162 to be exact. Having been to their exhibition in NYC back in 2017, … ContinuedThe post FRIDAY WIND DOWN: A one of a kind visit to London and a pit-stop at The Wing with Bremont appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

Five of the best ocean-going chronographs beyond the usual suspects

Imagine yourself at the Formula 1 – or any motorsport it doesn’t really matter. You can smell the heat oozing off the rubbery tarmac, the whine and hum of engines, the exciting echo of a presenter on the loudspeaker introducing the racers. You look down and note the time, activating a pusher on the side … ContinuedThe post Five of the best ocean-going chronographs beyond the usual suspects appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

Girard-Perregaux Revives the Retro-Digital Casquette of 1976

Very much a genre that took off in the 1970s, the digital-display quartz watch was invented by American watch company Hamilton in 1970 – and positioned as a high-end watch at the time – and over the following decades various watchmakers from Europe and Asia have presented their own takes on the digital watch, though it is the latter that has come to dominate the market. One of the more memorable was the Girard-Perregaux ref. 9931 “Casquette” of 1976 that was especially sci-fi with its aerodynamic design. But after a brief production run it vanished from the brand’s catalogue until a surprising comeback last year with a unique, modernised version made for charity auction Only Watch 2021. And now Girard-Perregaux (GP) has finally taken the covers off the Casquette 2.0, which replicates the style of the original but with updated tech and materials, namely a ceramic and titanium case along with a new movement. Initial thoughts The Casquette 2.0 is a remake done well. It retains the appealing design of the vintage original, which was a good looking but dinky watch, and instead channels resources to improving the construction and functions. The new scratch-resistant ceramic case and bracelet demonstrates GP’s effort in a thoughtfully improved remake, especially since similarly priced watches tend to rely on black-coated steel. At the same time, the watch has improved in its function. It gains a chronograph and a second time zone, both of which are rudimentary but n...

Downsizing to 36mm opens up a world of value - the IWC Pilot’s Watch Automatic 36 proves it.

I love pilot’s watches and their cool monochrome aesthetics, but I don’t have the beefy arms to pull off a 44-46mm IWC. I’m also one of the fans who applauded in surprise (I might even have shouted) this year, when the Explorer went back to its vintage roots at 36mm. It’s perfectly sized at 36mm … ContinuedThe post Downsizing to 36mm opens up a world of value – the IWC Pilot’s Watch Automatic 36 proves it. appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

AUCTION NEWS: This Vacheron Constantin sold for just 40 per cent of its $3 million prediction. Is 2021 off to a catastrophically slow start?

I did choose to be very optimistic in my story last week about the astounding Vacheron Constantin Tour de L’Ile reaching a cool record $3 million to kick off a healthy 2021. The estimate was set at Antiquorum’s Important Modern & Vintage Timepieces in Monaco to a spread of $1.8 – $3 million. INTRODUCING: The Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Mariner Memovox is an alarmingly different type of Polaris

Although it’s never really taken off as an uber-popular complication like a chronograph or moonphase, the alarm function of JLC’s Memovox watches has, since they were first unveiled in 1968, been exceedingly practical. But it’s a complication that’s usually been found in the watchmaker’s daintier, and perhaps less practical, dress watches. This has meant that … ContinuedThe post INTRODUCING: The Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Mariner Memovox is an alarmingly different type of Polaris appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.
