Exploring the dark side with the Seiko Prospex LX Black editions

In case you’re not familiar with Seiko’s Prospex line, it’s a venerable series of ‘professional specification’ watches that are made with a purpose. It’s a long-running series full of iconic divers with colourful names like the Turtle and the Tuna Can. Baselworld 2019 bore witness to what is perhaps the boldest iteration of the collection yet … ContinuedThe post Exploring the dark side with the Seiko Prospex LX Black editions appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

Hands-On: De Bethune DB28 Steel Wheels Blue “The Hour Glass” SJX Watches

Hands-On: De Bethune DB28 Steel Wheels Blue “The Hour Glass”

De Bethune is the latest amongst a number of watchmakers to take the covers off a commemorative edition to mark the 40th anniversary of Singapore watch retail powerhouse The Hour Glass. For the occasion, De Bethune has put together a variant of its signature DB28 with sprung lugs that’s entirely clad in brilliant, blued titanium. First unveiled in polished titanium in 2018, the Steel Wheels is essentially a DB28 wearing a little less. A partially open-worked dial – which is actually the delta-shaped barrel bridge – reveals its pair of skeletonised barrels and gears. While the original Steel Wheels captures the essence of De Bethune, combining its trademark design with the brand’s fundamental technical innovations, it was lacking a generous dose of blued titanium, a gorgeous, heat-treated alloy that is synonymous with the brand. Colour consistency That has now been rectified with the DB28 Steel Wheels Blue, arguably the purest – and bluest – distillation of the brand’s core values and technical achievements. It features an intense, mirror-polished, blued titanium case and dial that form a striking contrast against the exposed inner mechanics. Though blued titanium is also used by other brands today, De Bethune was amongst the first to mirror-polish its titanium cases and more crucially, started using heat treatment to blue titanium way back in 2006. An example of an early De Bethune using blued titanium, a DB25L from 2010 with a blued dial...

If you’re interested in Geneva Seal standard watchmaking, this Louis Vuitton ‘high watch collection’ wants to meet you

Louis Vuitton, the watchmaker. As time goes on, this statement is gaining credibility and intrigue. And intrigue is certainly the word I would use to describe this shoot, which involved the Time+Tide team flying to Queenstown in New Zealand with Louis Vuitton to explore the brand’s high watch collection 2019. The setting was, sparing all … ContinuedThe post If you’re interested in Geneva Seal standard watchmaking, this Louis Vuitton ‘high watch collection’ wants to meet you appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

INTRODUCING: Time+Tide’s NOW Magazine Edition 1, now available in the shop

It was the kind of unanswerable question only a toddler could ask. We were sitting in a sun-warmed café window-seat early one morning, and the moon was still visible in the blue sky. While I sipped my latte, and my eldest daughter, Indie, smeared as much of her berry smoothie on her upper lip as … ContinuedThe post INTRODUCING: Time+Tide’s NOW Magazine Edition 1, now available in the shop appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

HANDS-ON: A classic in its purest form – the Rolex Oyster Perpetual 39 with white and black dials

One of the real hits from Rolex’s 2015 collection was the (now discontinued) Oyster Perpetual 39 (ref. 114300), a bare bones, simple steel timepiece that was still pure Rolex. Initially offered in a range of youthful, colourful dials, this year the Oyster Perpetual family expanded to include white and black dial variants, and they are, … ContinuedThe post HANDS-ON: A classic in its purest form – the Rolex Oyster Perpetual 39 with white and black dials appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

They say your 50s are the new 30s. I’m not sure who ‘they’ are, and why exactly they say that. But just Google “celebrities in their 50s” and you’ll see that maybe they are on to something (Halle Berry and Tom Cruise, amirite?). Well, this year marks 55 years of the TAG Heuer Carrera, and … ContinuedThe post HANDS-ON: The TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre Heuer 01 in black ceramic – 55 years on and still going strong appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

LIST: Out of the closet and onto the wrist – 6 of the best skeleton watches

Skeletonised watches - where the solid dial, and in some cases the entire movement, has been pared down and stripped away to leave the bare bones of the architecture - can be something of an acquired taste. And, as with all watches, the look can vary greatly, from ultra traditional to modern, depending on the execution. … ContinuedThe post LIST: Out of the closet and onto the wrist – 6 of the best skeleton watches appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

NEWS: Cartier on screen and in style for Ocean’s 8

Disclaimer: This post contains minimal traces of watch. But it does contain some very large diamonds. Ocean’s 8, the latest in the long-running series of elaborate heist movies, is about to hit our screens, but this time around the film is less of a bro session, as Clooney, Pitt et al. have been benched in … ContinuedThe post NEWS: Cartier on screen and in style for Ocean’s 8  appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

EVENT: Australian legends at the legendary launch of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris

Earlier this week, Jaeger-LeCoultre held the Australian launch of their brand new Polaris collection at Carriageworks in Sydney, and it was - to borrow Neil Patrick Harris’ line - legendary. In watchland, the Polaris is a legend in its own right (a watch I incidentally had the pleasure of seeing in its various stages of … ContinuedThe post EVENT: Australian legends at the legendary launch of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris  appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

VIDEO: The TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf 2018 Special Edition – an icon on the wrist

There’s more to a watch than how it feels and looks on the wrist. Some watches carry a weight greater than what you can measure in grams - they also bear the weight of decades of heritage and sociocultural significance. The Monaco - a true icon of the industry - is one such watch. It’s … ContinuedThe post VIDEO: The TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf 2018 Special Edition – an icon on the wrist appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

NEWS: The results from Russell Crowe’s auction, including a surprisingly expensive Speedmaster

Last night, the provocatively titled Russell Crowe: The Art of Divorce auction took place in Sydney, an event which was, essentially, a rather high-brow garage sale. Unsurprisingly, it was the lots relating to his Oscar-winning role in Gladiator that saw the strong returns, a breastplate netting $152,500, an aluminium sword $85,400, and a a chariot … ContinuedThe post NEWS: The results from Russell Crowe’s auction, including a surprisingly expensive Speedmaster appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

IN-DEPTH: The Omega Seamaster Railmaster

The story in a second: Behind the ultra-hyped trilogy models lays this cool, calm and not-in-any-way limited take on the Railmaster. Odd as it may seem today, but many of the enduring designs of mid-twentieth century watchmaking sprang from a very specific purpose: scientific exploration and the quest for accuracy. FRIDAY WIND DOWN: 10th November, 2017 – the Baselworld 2018 Edition

Wait, Basel in November?! What’s going on here? An understandable reaction but, still, Baselworld 2018 is in the headlines, five whole months before it opens its doors. But we’ll get to that in a second, right after we finish mixing this delicious summery cocktail (a lukewarm beer IRL), and saunter off to (yet another) glamorous … ContinuedThe post FRIDAY WIND DOWN: 10th November, 2017 – the Baselworld 2018 Edition appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

FRIDAY WIND DOWN: 4th August, 2017 – the fashion edition

Bear with me this week as I go a little off script. This week’s Wind Down is less about watches and more about all the stuff around them. Fashion. Technology. Business. Fine watchmaking manages to neatly intersect all these areas, informing and being informed by them. On a day-to-day level though, it’s easy to miss the linkages, … ContinuedThe post FRIDAY WIND DOWN: 4th August, 2017 – the fashion edition appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.
