“Just created, 50 years ago” – Baume & Mercier CEO David Chaumet recalls the Riviera story

One of the original champions of the geometrical, integrated-bracelet watch design is Baume & Mercier, first entering that market with the 1973 Riviera. Its dodecagonal bezel and minimal dial layout were designed by Jean-Claude Gueit, preceding many integrated-bracelet icons by some years. David Chaumet has been steering the Baume & Mercier ship since 2019, and … ContinuedThe post “Just created, 50 years ago” – Baume & Mercier CEO David Chaumet recalls the Riviera story appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

VIDEO: Baume & Mercier 2017 collection overview and their athletic new shape

Anyone who’s followed the SIHH 2017 releases will have noticed a few clear trends emerging – more entry level options, more yellow gold, that sort of thing. One trend that wasn’t as remarked upon in all the excitement of the fair was the way several brands made significant changes to their marketing and identity. Baume & Mercier is … ContinuedThe post VIDEO: Baume & Mercier 2017 collection overview and their athletic new shape appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

Introducing – 35mm, Tantalum, Vintage Piguet Movement… The MING 21.01 “Project 21” Strikes Hard

Watches, like most products from industrial activities, are ruled by constraints and compromises – whether these are commercial, technological, design-oriented or economical. This is why we, watch enthusiasts, can often be rather disappointed by many new releases. Surely, independent watchmakers playing in a much higher price range can overpass some of these constraints, as a […]

Watches, Stories, & Gear: Rolex Discontinues the Celebration Dial, an A.I. Debate Erupts over The Brutalist, and a Big Innovation in Soup

“Watches, Stories, and Gear” is a roundup of our favorite content, watch or otherwise, from around the internet. Here, we support other creators, explore interesting content that inspires us, and put a spotlight on causes we believe in. Oh, and any gear we happen to be digging on this week. We love gear. Share your story ideas or interesting finds with us by emailing info@wornandwound.com. A Soup Innovation Are you feeling pessimistic about the general state of the world? Are you plagued with thoughts that maybe America’s best days are behind it? Well we’re here to tell you not to let anyone tell you that this country is in decline, because Progresso – yes, the soup brand – just unveiled what has to be one of the most innovative products to hit store shelves in a generation. Are Soup Drops, a soup flavored hard candy, the product of an Oppenheimer level genius and a Manhattan Project-like initiative marshaling all of our most critical resources. Probably. Like a blue dialed Vacheron Constantin 222, we can hardly believe it took so long for someone to think of this.  The Brutalist and AI in Hollywood A debate is brewing in Hollywood over the use of AI, specifically in the newly minted 10 time Oscar nominee The Brutalist. Last week, news broke that the film makes use of an AI tool to make some of the Hungarian dialogue in the movie (spoken in voiceover) sound more authentic. It effectively takes Adrien Brody’s actual voice and augments it to make him sound mor...

Hands-On: the Girard-Perregaux Laureato Chronograph 42mm

It is not common practice for us to spend time crafting a hands-on review for watches that sit outside of our personal periphery. There needs to be a thread to pull, some emotion to lean on, and an opinion worth sharing. So, in full disclosure, when arranging a loan for the Gerard-Perregeaux Leureato Chronograph 42mm I did so based on the fact that it had been a while since I had spent any considerable time with a GP and didn’t have any solid thoughts on writing about it. The model is a bit overlooked in the market, has a higher and extremely competitive price point, and has been overshadowed a bit by the titanium version released earlier in 2024. But sitting there with the Laureato Chronograph dial dancing in the light shooting bursts of blue at me, I really began studying the piece. To understand the Laureato though, you must understand the history and a bit of the controversy surrounding it.  An oft-forgotten integrated bracelet watch originating from the “golden” Genta age of design, the Girard-Perregaux Laureato can trace its roots back to 1975. While not a Genta design, some believe the Laureato bears a striking resemblance or is a love child of the iconic AP references that gained him eventual fame. For full context, we had the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak in 1972, the Baume et Mercier Riviera in 1973, the original Laureato in 1975, the IWC Ingenieur and Patek Philippe Nautilus in 1976, and then the Vacheron Constantin 222 following in 1977. Of course, there are...
