If there were an Academy Award in the watch world for brand that’s evolved not only furthest, but also the most intelligently, from its origins, the ladies and gentleman of the Academy might well have to give the award to Panerai. For much of its history a somewhat obscure maker of instruments for the Italian […]

For industry insiders the volatility of the watch industry is no secret. A great idea for a new watch is often not only the starting point of an adventure in this industry, it can for be, for many unfortunately, also the end. Even renowned manufactures need to work hard to not only continue previously enjoyed […]

The Antoine Martin Slowrunner that was released about a year ago came with a stupendously large balance wheel that beat at an astounding 1Hz. This was a watch that not only offered a very unique complication, but also came with a bunch of other useful everyday features. A date and a power reserve indicator came […]

When you say Jaquemarts, you are instantly saying Ulysse Nardin. This complication has become a benchmark complication for the brand since the 1980’s and currently Ulysse Nardin is the only brand that still makes watches that feature Jaquemarts on the dial side of the watch. A new addition to this collection is always a special […]

There’s something beautiful about whimsical complications, the kind that purposely disregards the utilitarian function of a watch: that of telling time, in order to make a statement. Like the well regarded Hermès Arceau Le Temps Suspendu, the new Dressage L’Heure Masquée (literally “Time Hidden”) from the same brand continues their somewhat playful obsession, that of making the […]

Surprise was what the Zenith El Primero Stratos Flyback Striking 10th chronograph elicited when it was first shown at BaselWorld in 2010. The mesmerizing effect of the large red hand moving faster than expected was, without doubt, what most watch lovers would define as their “Striking 10th moment”, when previous expectations on how a chronograph […]

Watches are probably what doesn’t come to mind when you think about Spain, yet an very extraordinary watch brand calls it home. Pita Barcelona was founded by master-watchmaker Aniceto Jiménez Pita, who became a candidate member of AHCI in 2004 and was accepted as a full member in 2006. Pita’s style isn’t about overly complicated […]

There’s something about a dive watch that emanates an unassailable image of unabashed cool. We’re talking Johnny Hartman and John Coltrane jamming in ice underpants cool. Maybe it has to do with the rakish élan perpetuated by 007 pairing his white dinner jacket with the Rolex Submariner ref. 6538 on a Nato strap. You could easily imagine him shucking shantung and diving into the sea to demolish the assembled forces of SMERSCH with nothing more than a sharpened clamshell, a bevy of torpedo-chested lady friends and his trusty dive watch. But it also has to do with the total veracity and slavish devotion to function embodied by these timepieces. After all, these were tools that soldiers and civilians alike literally depended on with their very lives.

My first BaselWorld day kicked off with the traditional fair press conference where I discovered that Swiss exports were up 1.9%, that I was one of a staggering 4,000 journalists visiting the show, and one of the 50 percent of people working in the Swiss watch industry who aren’t actually Swiss! I wasn’t quite […]

Some watches have the ability to grab your heart and never let go, and the love becomes all the more intense when the watch reveals it’s magic only when you get closer. This was the curious experience I had with the Tudor FastRider Black Shield, that while having been in the market for close to a […]

Today over 100,000 people from over 100 countries are crossing oceans and continents on their way to BaselWorld for the largest watch fair in the world. As Revolution’s Swiss editor my journey is only a feeble 229 km, but it doesn’t make it any the less exciting as I prepare for one of the most […]

As a watch manufacturer these days, having a tourbillon in your collection is hardly enough to set you apart from the crowd since many haute horlogerie brands already have one in their collections. Discerning collectors have therefore started to look for the next step, with even more impressive iterations beyond the basic tourbillon. Brands have […]
