The Zenith Pilot Montre d’Aeronef Type 20 line has certainly proven to be one of the more astute introductions into the market by former CEO, Jean-Frédéric Dufour. As a way to connect to the brand’s past, it ticks all the right boxes, with a retro styling that remains true to the originals that Zenith used […]

“We live submerged at the bottom of an ocean of air.” –Evangelista Torricelli, 1644 It’s a dangerous thing to start a new watch company –in addition to an almost infinite number of ill-advised possible business goofs, standing out from the crowd enough for people to notice what you are doing, as well as consistently developing […]

Compared to a diver’s watch, which has rather strict definitions of what it is required to have before it can be classed as such, the pilot’s watch remains in a kind of no-man’s land. What constitutes a pilot’s watch then depends rather more on opinion than objective fact. The fluidity at which opinion changes as to […]

When you say Jaquemarts, you are instantly saying Ulysse Nardin. This complication has become a benchmark complication for the brand since the 1980’s and currently Ulysse Nardin is the only brand that still makes watches that feature Jaquemarts on the dial side of the watch. A new addition to this collection is always a special […]

There’s something beautiful about whimsical complications, the kind that purposely disregards the utilitarian function of a watch: that of telling time, in order to make a statement. Like the well regarded Hermès Arceau Le Temps Suspendu, the new Dressage L’Heure Masquée (literally “Time Hidden”) from the same brand continues their somewhat playful obsession, that of making the […]

Surprise was what the Zenith El Primero Stratos Flyback Striking 10th chronograph elicited when it was first shown at BaselWorld in 2010. The mesmerizing effect of the large red hand moving faster than expected was, without doubt, what most watch lovers would define as their “Striking 10th moment”, when previous expectations on how a chronograph […]

There’s something about a dive watch that emanates an unassailable image of unabashed cool. We’re talking Johnny Hartman and John Coltrane jamming in ice underpants cool. Maybe it has to do with the rakish élan perpetuated by 007 pairing his white dinner jacket with the Rolex Submariner ref. 6538 on a Nato strap. You could easily imagine him shucking shantung and diving into the sea to demolish the assembled forces of SMERSCH with nothing more than a sharpened clamshell, a bevy of torpedo-chested lady friends and his trusty dive watch. But it also has to do with the total veracity and slavish devotion to function embodied by these timepieces. After all, these were tools that soldiers and civilians alike literally depended on with their very lives.

Some watches have the ability to grab your heart and never let go, and the love becomes all the more intense when the watch reveals it’s magic only when you get closer. This was the curious experience I had with the Tudor FastRider Black Shield, that while having been in the market for close to a […]

As most thoughts were still on Geneva and while the jury was still out deciding the good, the bad and the ugly from SIHH (and thankfully this year there were far more in the first category than the latter two), Hamilton was giving the world a sneaky peek at what it will unveil in Baselworld. […]

Now this is a piece of news that has certainly got me excited. With the impending cessation of ETA movement sales to parties outside the Swatch Group, many watch brands have taken on the gauntlet, and have just decided to go on it on their own. This is the reason why we are seeing watch […]

It is nearly impossible to talk about Chopard without mentioning its long-standing relationship with cinema. From becoming partner of the Cannes Film Festival in 1998, and designing its legendary Palme d’Or, to being the official jeweler of several movies (such as Diana released last year), cinema has fueled Chopard’s creative spirit for decades. Cinema has […]

The rumors that MCT was about to launch a new model at Basel World made me quite nervous, since I have been huge admirer of the brand and love their first model, the Sequential ONE. MCT is one of the smaller independents that have released, as of now one model and a variation, the Sequential […]

Purists will immediately, and rightfully, note that Black Tie as a dress code does not allow for the men to wear wristwatches. Yet those regulations come from an era in which Great Britain still had a King and every airplane a propeller. Times have changed, and so have watches. In 2011 Piaget surprised everybody by […]

As a watch manufacturer these days, having a tourbillon in your collection is hardly enough to set you apart from the crowd since many haute horlogerie brands already have one in their collections. Discerning collectors have therefore started to look for the next step, with even more impressive iterations beyond the basic tourbillon. Brands have […]

There’s a lot of postulation as to why suddenly a whole new generation of watch collectors, myself included, have become so fixated with vintage watches. To me, the charm of an over-half-a-century-old Rolex GMT or a nearly-40-year-old Patek Nautilus Ref. 3700/1A is that when you strap it to your wrist, you realize that, while time […]

Numbers have played significant roles throughout cultures in both scientific and spiritual realms, their importance deriving from ancient societies which believed that each numerological figure possessed a distinctive meaning. For the Chinese, the number eight symbolizes wealth, prosperity and the totality of the universe. For mathematicians, an “8” lying down stands for infinity, while the […]

For all its prosaic utility, the second-time-zone complication is a remarkably romantic function. On the surface, it is what it is: an indication of the time in a different location in the world, which allows for convenient reference when traveling. For frequent travelers, however, the second-time-zone function carries an additional emotional charge: it is an […]
