As a watch manufacturer these days, having a tourbillon in your collection is hardly enough to set you apart from the crowd since many haute horlogerie brands already have one in their collections. Discerning collectors have therefore started to look for the next step, with even more impressive iterations beyond the basic tourbillon. Brands have […]

Panerai CEO Angelo Bonati takes us through the novelties for the brand at the 2014 SIHH, including the new Radomir Chronograph, the Radomir pocket watch and the new “8 Days” wall coming with the in-house P5000 movement. During a recent press introduction of a new watch I was sitting next to an editor of a major fashion magazine. She was expressing her unhappiness about her watch. This had very little to do with the brand it was from, but everything with the fact that it was an automatic. She loved the watch, […]

The standout novelty for A. Lange & Söhne at SIHH 2014, the Richard Lange Perpetual Calendar “Terraluna” is a complicated watch that features a constant force 14 day power reserve, a regulator style dial and the trademark Big Date. The real surprise though is on the back of the watch, with the beautiful and logical […]

Since its creation in 2011, the Detroit based Shinola has become known for a number of quality products including bicycles, journals and watches. There are watches and then there is the Rebellion 540 Magnum Tourbillon. Actually it is only the tourbillon part of its name that gives it away that we are actually talking about a watch, and not an assault rifle or muscle car. That’s not to say that the Rebellion 540 Magnum Tourbillon doesn’t have anything […]

Two years ago, in 2012, Seiko introduced a Tenth Anniversary model of their Grand Seiko GMT watch –one with a strap, and one with a bracelet. The Grand Seiko watches are very well known among enthusiasts –so much so that if you’re reading this story at all you probably know about them already –but the […]

One of the most unusual and interesting pieces of horological exotica I can remember ever seeing had a somewhat rocky start in life: the watch (or watches, as there are now several incarnations) made by Zenith and known as the Christophe Colomb. Zenith was going through a period of experimentation, under its former CEO Thierry […]

Chinese New Year happened just recently, and this time its the turn of the Horse to be the featured animal from the Chinese Zodiac. To commemorate this, Panerai has released a new 100 piece limited edition in the form of the Panerai Luminor Sealand for the Year of the Horse. This is a watch that […]

Name a watch brand that doesn’t have a tourbillon in its collection? They’re still out there, but their number seems to decrease every year. Even though many brands don’t make their tourbillons in-house, it does illustrate how technically complicated movements have become more and more a part of the general landscape in the watch world, […]

We covered the MB&F; Legacy Machine No.2 when it first came out last year in an exclusive first look by our very own Editor in Chief of REVO Asia, Suzanne Wong. (See the article here.) This time, in an exclusive video, we revisit this amazing watch that was shot recently while we were in Geneva […]

One wonders how it is possible for watch companies to constantly pump out new products for eager watch lovers every year. The pace of innovation is necessarily fast, with competition abounding from every quarter, and the fickle crowd waiting to abandon yesterday’s darling for today’s star. Couple that with the fact that every watch that […]

While the Fine Watch Making Collection is getting all the attention and is developing further into a series of the most dazzling complications, Cartier has certainly not forgotten what their strength has always been throughout all those years. Classics, historics and famous lines are something that always appealed and still appeals to a large group […]

The house of Jaeger LeCoultre is one of those who we keep in close watch here at Deployant. They are one of the most innovative in movement development, and design, but also in creating beautiful timepieces which will stand the test of time. This year’s SIHH crop is no different. Last year at Basel World, Hautlence announced their first, shall we say, ‘entry level’ model, the Destination! It took a while before the finished product became available but delivery to the dealers recently started in December 2013, right before Christmas. The SIHH closed last Friday and we are now selecting the loads photographs and videos we took during the meetings with the brands. Last week I posted about Cartier’s Fine Watch Making Collection 2014, since the mainstream collection I only photographed last Friday. There were some remarks that there was not much news in the […]

The Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie is one of the two foremost watch shows each year. This was the question I was pondering when the Piaget Altiplano 900P was placed in my hands. Piaget of course, are the masters of the Ultra Thin watch, having dedicated themselves to the pursuit of this particular horological niche throughout their history. The brand holds world records for thinness in up to 12 categories, and for this, there is no denying that despite other brands introducing ultra thin watches from time to time, Piaget have shown that their focus has reaped rewards, and also what can be done when a movement, stripped to the bare essentials, can produce a wonder of mechanical beauty.

The first wave of introductions from the 2014 SIHH are out and from one of our favorite houses of haute horlogerie –A. Lange & Söhne –comes the Richard Lange Perpetual Calendar “Terraluna.” By the numbers, here’s what we’ve got: a perpetual calendar regulator-dial watch, with instantaneous jumping month, day, leap year, and big date indications; there’s […]

When Jean-Frédéric Dufour took over the helm of Zenith a lot changed. The brand went back to basics with a more sober design and as well, quite unique for such a pedigreed watch brand, more sober prices. This change in strategy served Zenith well, re-igniting the enthusiasm of many watch connoisseurs who had felt detached […]

The first watch made by the Glashütte-based firm of Moritz Grossmann that I saw in person was the Benu wristwatch, which the company debuted –in one of the most low-key launches I can remember –in 2010. The Benu was a watch very much to my personal tastes: discreet, very precisely made, with a sober beauty […]
