One of the first things that you may be thinking is “wow, cool Explorer II homage”. I’d say you’re not totally wrong either because that’s how I made my way to the SBGN003. I was looking hard at 5 digit Explorer II’s, but still had a hard time committing to that much spend on a watch, especially with a 9 month old baby in the house and the pandemic still being very much a thing. I remember seeing the Grand Seiko SBGN003 pop up in my Instagram feed and started to do my deep dive. There was a lot to like about the watch, and being that I already had another GS with a 9F movement in my collection, I more or less knew what to expect. Once it hit the Watch Recon alerts page, I knew it would end up in my collection. If you’re able to set a Watch Recon alert without buying the watch, you are a stronger person than I. When the watch showed up on a hot August afternoon, it just immediately clicked. The finishing on the 39mm steel case was perfect. It fit my 6.75” wrist like a glove and quickly rose to the top of my most-worn watches. The chief executive of Audemars Piguet for just over a year now, Ilaria Resta leads the storied brand into its 150th year. In her short time at the helm, she has already overseen the opening of the expansive, vertically integrated Arc manufacture in Le Brassus as well as the first instalment of the brand’s anniversary celebrations. Prior to AP, she spent over 25 years in fast-moving consumer goods, first at Proctor & Gamble and then at Swiss fragrance and flavour specialist Firmenich, making her one of the rare outsiders at the top of Swiss watchmaking, a traditionally insular industry. We recently spoke to Ms Resta about balancing tradition and technology, collaborations, and why there will never be a Royal Oak Star Wheel. This past Friday, we had the pleasure of kicking off the first-ever Dallas Windup Watch Fair with an unforgettable evening celebrating Bulova’s 150-year legacy. Hosted at the Alamo Drafthouse Cedars, the event brought together watch enthusiasts for an exclusive screening of a brand-new documentary, America Telling Time: 150 Years of Bulova, which chronicles the brand’s history of innovation and firsts. The night began with guests arriving and settling in, followed by an insightful introduction from the Worn & Wound team. From there, the lights dimmed, and the much-anticipated film took center stage, offering a deep dive into the pioneering spirit that has defined Bulova for a century and a half. The documentary featured rich storytelling and stunning visuals, including artwork by the talented Alex Asfour (@Alex247), who created both the movie artwork and a special Texas-inspired piece for the occasion. When you think ‘heirloom watch,’ what springs to mind? I think most of us probably default to grandpa’s hypothetical kitchen drawer Omega, or the Cartier Panthère that mom wore every day when you were a kid - or even the silly character watch you got as a kid that kicked off an obsession. Regardless, one constant is that, for the most part, we associate the term ‘heirloom’ with watches of particular significance (though not necessarily value) handed down through the generations. One thing we don’t often think about are watches gifted in the other direction, from child to parent. But sometimes, a watch pops up that rethinks this standard inter-generational path. Often, it’s something relatively straightforward, like a birthday gift for a parent, but occasionally, it’s something more than that. I first came across a short video of the Tempo Rubato metronome on Instagram. Before I could message my contact in Japan who posted it, I already had an email waiting for me in the inbox from him introducing this wrist metronome device and its creator to me. I exchanged emails to understand Gaku Okada’s background and details of his wrist metronome. Okada was born in 2002 in Hokkaido and was influenced by music from an early age, especially jazz drumming. Unlike many watchmakers, he did not cultivate a specific interest in watches, however he did develop a knack for making complex mechanical components. After graduating from high school, his skills brought him to Hiko Mizuno College of Jewelry, for watchmaking classes. During his freshman year, Okada developed the concept of a mechanical wrist metronome. This idea originated from his practical need as a jazz drummer, as he frequently sought a method to quickly and accurately establish tempo before performances. Although electronic metronomes were readily available, he wanted to create a compact mechanical device that could be worn as a watch. As a student at the watchmaking school, Okada started part time work at the Precision Watch Tokyo company, working with watchmakers Hajime Asaoka and Jiro Katayama. Asaoka is a well known master watchmaker and the creator of the Kurono Tokyo and Takano brands. Katayama is the founder of the popular Otsuka Lotec brand.
