Review – The Citizen Zenshin 60 Super Titanium, The Automatic Integrated Watch That Redefines Value

Undeniably, recent years have seen a transformation in mechanical watchmaking, surprisingly in both directions. While traditional brands have gone up in price quite drastically, we have seen quite a change on the other side of the spectrum. What once required thousands of euros can now be had for a fraction of that: finishing, materials, in-house […]

Introducing – The Grøne Oldenzaal Moment Meter, the Grönefeld Brothers’ Vision of an Accessible Chronograph

While Grönefeld, the famed independent watchmaking company from the Netherlands, created by the so-called Horological Brothers (Tim and Bart), is nothing new on the scene, there’s another project that might not (yet) have the same impact: Grøne Oldenzaal. A recent venture of the brothers, this brand aims at bringing some of Grönefeld’s style and spirit […]

The ABCs of Time – How Are Mechanical Watches Wound? A Comprehensive Guide to Automatic and Manual Movements

There are basically two types of watch movements – mechanical and quartz. The latter is powered by a battery or a combination of solar and rechargeable cells, while the former is powered by one or sometimes multiple mainsprings with no electrical input. There are also grey areas like Grand Seiko’s Spring Drive or Accutron’s Electrostatic […]

First Look – New Brand Atelier Nossedh and its Debut Vintage-Inspired Chronograph, the AN.01 Series

Atelier Nossedh (passing time in the Sámi language of the Northerners) is a new microbrand created by a Swedish designer, Alexander Gimell, who sought to build the watch he couldn’t find: small, classically proportioned, inspired by some glorious vintage chronographs and made with the kind of restraint that earns wrist time. The debut piece, the […]

Founded in 1893 and rooted in the Saxon cradle of German watchmaking, Union Glashütte has never shied away from character. The brand´s Belisar series is famous for its automotive-inspired editions, and needless to say, the design cues of the Speedster editions have always been taken from a German car. This year, for the first time, […]

Introducing – The Hermès H08 Chronograph, Now in Naples Yellow

Since formalising its modern manufacture capabilities (including a long-standing stake in Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier), La Montre Hermès has developed a distinct vocabulary with typography that’s unmistakably Hermès. The H08 collection, launched in 2021, translated the approach into a daily-wear sports watch that felt designed rather than engineered. Its cushion case, graphic numerals, and mix of […]

First Look – The New Bulgari Bronzo GMT and Bronzo Chronograph (Incl. Video)

Bulgari’s Aluminium collection erupted on the scene in 1998. Fusing design elements from earlier models like the 1975 Bvlgari Bvlgari with the twice-emblazoned brand name on the gold bezel, the slick Aluminium with its bold mix of lightweight aluminium and rubber accents was a runaway success. Making its much-awaited comeback in 2020 during Geneva Watch […]

First Look – The new Albishorn Marinagraph, The Imaginary Vision of a Regatta Chronograph

Imaginary vintage… This is the idea behind young indie brand Albishorn, the project of Sebastien Chaulmontet (Director of Innovation and Marketing at Sellita) and Fabien Collioud (designer). The idea is to create vintage-inspired models that never existed, but that could have been real at a time… Hypothetical watches that can be seen as missing links […]

The early 17-series brought the […]

Review: the LÖBNER Steelracer Chronograph Worn & Wound

Review: the LÖBNER Steelracer Chronograph

There are two kinds of tool watches out there. There are the tool watches we typically think of: sporty, rugged types, often divers or field watches, that can take a beating. And then there is the other type of tool watches, which are simply watches that resemble tools. No, not in the human sense, but rather technical items like gauges and other instruments. Germany’s LÖBNER’s current watches firmly fit in the latter category, though they are not unwelcome in the former. Founded in 1862, LÖBNER specialized in precision timing equipment, such as stopwatches that could time to 1/100th of a second, as well as military chronoscopes that went all the way to 1/1000th of a second. They were a timekeeper at the Olympic Games, and worked closely with motorsports. The brand ceased operation in 1944 and was revived in 2023 with the launch of both three-hand and chronograph models. Designed by Emmanuel Dietrich, also of the eponymous brand Dietrich, for its relaunch, LÖBNER set out to create luxury timepieces that speak to this heritage while pursuing a distinct personality through a strict design language and novel functionality. The resulting models, a three-hander with an internal bezel called Sledge and a chronograph called Steelracer, feature angular integrated bracelet designs and dials with a graphic sensibility. LÖBNER was kind enough to send both over to check out, though for the sake of brevity, this review focuses on the Steelracer chronograph. Featuring an integrat...
