Daniel Roth Unveils Extra Plat Souscription

Continuing with its revival, Daniel Roth debuts its second modern-day timepiece, the Extra Plat Souscription. Hewing to the formula established by the Tourbillon Souscription, the Extra Plat Souscription stays faithful to the 1990s original in size and style, but is equipped with an all-new calibre developed from the ground up. Like the Tourbillon Souscription, the Extra Plat Souscription debuts as a 20-piece limited edition in 18k yellow gold, matched with a guilloche dial in solid 18k yellow gold. Initial thoughts As with the Tourbillon before it, the Extra Plat Souscription looks and feels like the original at a distance, but reveals a higher degree of refinement up close. This is especially evident on the dial that is covered in finely grained guilloche, done with a hand-operated straight-line engine. In fact, the Extra Plat is arguably more sophisticated than the equivalent original, more so than the Tourbillon. The 1990s-era model was fitted with Frederic Piguet movements, either manual-wind or automatic depending on the variant, which were fine calibres but relatively industrial and widely used by higher-end brands like Blancpain. The DR002 in the new Extra Plat, on the other hand, is a new construction with the refinements expected in a watch of this calibre (and price). It’s shame that the movement is concealed behind a solid back, but that will become an open back with the subsequent, regular-production version. While the new Extra Plat is a beautiful homage th...

Fratello Favorites: The Best Watches Of 2024 - RJ’s Picks From Daniel Roth, Piaget, Omega, And More

According to some, 2024 was a slow year for new watches. I beg to differ! It might have been slow in sales but not in new models to choose from. I haven’t been writing as much for the magazine as I did in the past or as I would like to, but I have been […] Visit Fratello Favorites: The Best Watches Of 2024 - RJ’s Picks From Daniel Roth, Piaget, Omega, And More to read the full article.

Watches, Stories, & Gear: Saving Frank Lloyd Wright’s Only Skyscraper, 007 Socks, and Daniel Day-Lewis Has NOT Abandoned His Child

Celebrate Goldfinger with these Socks  Goldfinger, the James Bond film which many agree is the very best of the lot, turns 60 this year. What better way to celebrate such a monumental anniversary than with a set of novelty socks? If you’re of a similar mindset, the London Sock Exchange (great name for a sock brand) has you covered. The Goldfinger 60th Anniversary Gift Set features five sock designs celebrating the film in a variety of fun colors. Each has a small nod to the movie with representations of characters, including Auric Goldfinger and Bond himself, as well as Bond’s classic DB5. It’s a subtle way to pay tribute to 007. Saving Frank Lloyd Wright’s Only Skyscraper  You would think that any building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright would be something of a permanent tribute to the architect, forever a piece of the landscape it was built on. Unfortunately, that’s simply not true. There are many Wright designed homes, for instance, where people actually live, and who is to say the owners may or may not do their property? An...

Introducing: The Stunning Daniel Roth Tourbillon Rose Gold

I was surprised and intrigued when word got out last year that Daniel Roth would make a comeback. As a fan of Roth’s watches, I was eager to find out whether the LVMH designers would honor his famous double-ellipse case design in style. When the Daniel Roth Tourbillon Souscription came out in March of 2023, […] Visit Introducing: The Stunning Daniel Roth Tourbillon Rose Gold to read the full article.

Hands On: Daniel Roth Tourbillon Rose Gold

Following the revival of Daniel Roth with the launch of the limited edition Tourbillon Souscription last year, the brand is now building its catalogue with the Tourbillon Rose Gold, which will be a regular production model. The Tourbillon Rose Gold is a variation of the original with tweaks to the decoration and material, but most significantly, the new tourbillon is fitted with a display back that shows off the DR001 movement. Initial thoughts It was expected that Daniel Roth would follow up with a regular production tourbillon, so the Tourbillon Rose Gold is not surprising. Like the Souscription, it has an obviously high quality of make in construction, finishing, and details. Both the dial and case are 5N rose gold so it is strikingly pink, giving it a stronger presence than the Souscription, which in comparison is low key. It was a shame that the DR001 movement was hidden in the Tourbillon Souscription because the calibre is worth admiring. The movement is high quality in both design and finishing, boasting many details that enthusiasts now regard as key elements of haute horlogerie. The quality of finishing is impressive. In fact, the movement decoration is as good as some small-scale independent brands, reflecting the attention to detail that has characterised the resurrected Daniel Roth brand. Admittedly, such fine finishing isn’t as rare as it once was, since it is now sought after by enthusiasts and specialist subcontractors have sprung up to cater to that deman...

Opinion: Daniel Craig, the Olympics, and that Mystery Seamaster

Did you watch the Olympic Games over the past two weeks? There’s a good chance you did: it’s been widely reported that ratings for the Paris Games were up across the board, with upwards of 30 million people tuning in to NBC’s coverage each night across all platforms, including the Peacock streaming app, which seemed to finally find its groove this year after a clunky experience in Tokyo three years ago. Even if you didn’t catch the big events night to night, just an occasional glance at coverage would have made it crystal clear who the timing sponsor for the Olympics was. While no one doubts that the Olympics are all about the athletes, it’s an enormous event for Omega (and a slew of other Olympic corporate partners). Omega branding is everywhere, and why wouldn’t it be? Their contributions to the Olympic experience are genuinely important and factor into every timed competition.  But rather than Omega’s timing prowess, another story dominated the brand’s Paris Olympic story. Last week, Daniel Craig, formerly the actor who played James Bond, currently the actor who plays Benoit Blanc, was spotted taking in the games wearing a watch that was both familiar and…not. As has been covered widely across the watch internet, Craig was photographed wearing an Omega Seamaster Professional that doesn’t currently exist in the brand’s catalog. It would appear to have a black dial and no date, a configuration that many enthusiasts would certainly be interested in. ...

Daniel Craig Spotted With A New Omega Seamaster Professional 300M At The Paris 2024 Olympic Games

All eyes are on Paris this summer as the city hosts the Summer Olympics. But today, it’s not the XXXIII Olympiad that has caught our attention. Instead, it was the watch on the wrist of someone in the crowd minding their own business and enjoying the games.
