DUG: The New Kids on the Block in Glashütte

On a warm and sunny Saturday in June, I visited the inauguration ceremony for DUG workshop. DUG (Deutsche Uhrenmanufaktur Glashütte) is the eleventh company to establish itself in the watchmaking town of Glashütte. The last brand to open a workshop in this town were young independent duo, Kallinich Claeys.  The DUG workshop is just around the corner from Lange HQ, across from Glashütte Watch Museum, and on the steep road leading up to one of Nomos’s workshops. The building previously belonged to C.H. Wolf, and there is still some old signage around the building. It is a modern and fairly large building for a micro-brand to occupy. It has tall ceilings and a row of new watchmaker benches along with a few administrative and conference rooms. It could easily host a medium size watch company. The DUG workshop Toni Brodführer, founder and Managing Director of DUG, is planning to move in there before the end of the year with three watchmakers. He is also open to sharing the space with other small watch companies. At the opening ceremony, I was pleased to run into Thibault Claeys and Johannes Kallinich, who were impressed by the building and seemed to like what Toni is doing. Zenith and Time+Tide Collaborate on a Third Defy “Surfer” Limited Edition

Zenith has once again partnered with the Australian watch media website Time+Tide on a limited edition Defy. The third watch in the trilogy, which follows the Defy Classic Skeleton Night Surfer from 2021 and the Defy Skyline Skeleton Night Surfer El Primero in 2023 completes the concept of the “Surfer Trilogy” with a bold white ceramic case that incorporates design details from each of the previous watches. It’s definitely an aesthetic change of pace, but taken together, all three watches make a lot of sense as a trio. Prior “Surfer” limited editions have sold out quickly, so if you were after one and missed out, you now have another (final?) chance to snag one.  Each of the previous limited edition Defys in the “Surfer” series have been in micro-blasted titanium cases, making the white ceramic here a stark contrast. Ceramic, though, is arguably the material most associated with the contemporary Defy, whether in the now discontinued Classic line or the new Skyline series. Zenith is one of a small handful of brands that has reached true expert status with this material. Like other Skylines, the case measures 41mm in diameter and is 100 meters water resistant with a screw down crown.  We’ve seen a white ceramic Skyline before, but this new Time+Tide LE, even with a case that has so much presence, is really defined by the dial. In a recent Youtube review, Marques Brownlee (also known as MKBHD) describes it as “…cassette tapes glued to the side of your head…” and we have to agree. Despite their polarizing appearance, Marques goes on to note that these headphones feature several tactile buttons allowing users to easily adjust settings, in contrast to many other options that use touch gestures for volume control, pairing, and other controls. Tudor Releases their Latest Pelagos FXD Chrono

Tudor continues their extended campaign of surprise drops, and colorful editions of their Pelagos FXD Chrono, with the new Pelagos FXD Chrono “Yellow.” It’s been clear for some time now that Tudor’s broad release strategy includes limited production versions of certain key references, and they frequently highlight a bright color that’s not part of the core collection, and are always tied to a specific athletic partnership. This new version of the Pelagos FXD Chrono is once again made from Tudor’s carbon composite material, and is effectively the same design as their recent release of this watch in pink. That watch, announced in May, was timed to coincide with the Giro d’Italia cycling event, and this one is similarly meant to be tied to the Tour de France. Specifically, Tudor has identified their partnership with Fabian Cancellara, a brand ambassador and former pro cyclist who is now the owner of the Tudor Pro Cycling Team, as the impetus for this watch. Cancellara, over the course of his cycling career, led the Tour de France for a total of 29 days and obtained 8 stage victories. Yellow is the color of the jersey worn by the Tour de France leader through each stage, so you often see watches tied to the race sporting the color it’s most associated with. Cartier Crash Alternatives For Every Budget

We’re back at it again with another "alternatives" roundup for some of the most iconic watches in watchmaking history, and in this episode, we’re getting more quirky than we ever have before. Which is only fitting given today’s subject, which is one of the most subversive watch designs of all time: the illustrious Cartier Crash.  Before I launch into some quick Cartier Crash history and then contemporary alternatives at multiple budgets, let’s establish some key design ingredients in the recipe at hand. Because I didn’t want to make you all eat up some AliExpress Cartier Crash phonies, and because the design is so iconic that most watchmakers haven’t really attempted their own imitations, I will be leaning into asymmetry or hints at surrealism here instead of more 1:1 design alternatives. Before I begin, I will say that the avant-garde era of the 1960s and '70s, before the big houses had such rigid design codes, is one of my favorites in watchmaking history. Here in the modern age, many brands seem less willing to experiment boldly, and really keep things, largely, safe. Still, there are some asymmetrical watch gems out there, and below, they will get a little time in the spotlight. I will warn you now that on the current market, prices for more bold watch designs run a little steep, so the budget I’m working around here is at a higher price point than I try to stick to (though I have thrown in some affordable options). Can’t Stop Won’t Stop: Over $51K Raised at the 2025 Ride to Conquer Cancer

It’s been about two weeks since the 2025 Ride to Conquer Cancer charity bike ride took place in Ontario, Canada, along a 200km course beginning in Toronto, winding through Mississauga and Hamilton, and finally ending in Niagara-on-the-Lake. For those who may not be familiar, the Ride hosts thousands of participants raising millions of dollars each year to fund groundbreaking cancer research and patient care via the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. This year, I, along with six riders from the watch community, participated in the ride as part of team Can’t Stop Won’t Stop. The team was led by friend of Worn & Wound and now 10-year ride participant (yes, 10 years!), Matt Smith-Johnson. I’m proud to report that Can’t Stop Won’t Stop raised over $51,000 CAD (roughly $37,000 USD), and the Ride as a whole broke records by raising $20.61 million CAD.
