Up Close: Akrivia AK-02 Tourbillon Hour Minute

Last year’s Akrivia Chronomètre Contemporain made its young creator, Rexhep Rexhepi, a star, but the brand’s foundational watch is actually the “AK” series. Chunky and slightly sporty, the AK watches are a world away from the classical styling of the Chronomètre Contemporain, but boast the same level of movement finishing, along with a bonus of elaborately hand-hammered dials. The second model in the AK series was the AK-02 Tourbillon Heure Minute, or “Hour Minute” – a time-only watch with a tourbillon regulator. The AK-02 is probably the finest finished tourbillon wristwatch in its price segment, and in the price segments above it as well. The AK case It’s a fairly large watch, with the case measuring 43.0mm with and 12.9mm high. But the lugs are short so it feels fairly compact on the wrist. And because the AK-02 is typically found in a steel case, as is pictured here, or occasionally titanium, it is usually lightweight. Gold cases are available for a modest premium, though rarely requested. The case feels like it’s trying too hard, and consequently feels overly built, with thick lugs and a high case band. It’s too chunky for my taste, and doesn’t quite suit the refined movement inside. That being said, the AK-style case has it fans for several reason. The design is distinctive, more distinctive than the old school Chronomètre Contemporain case. And it is also finished to a high degree, with contrasting polished and brushed surfaces; the...

VIDEO: Andrew picks 3 watches from Basel under $3000 for your first good watch, and it’s two divers and a battle-weary soldier

I can remember very clearly what it was like to be on the other side of my first ‘good’ watch. I would trawl daily the second-hand sites for incomings, researching models and brands. I would stare in wonder at the pages I was laying out in a magazine for a watch retailer – mentally filing … ContinuedThe post VIDEO: Andrew picks 3 watches from Basel under $3000 for your first good watch, and it’s two divers and a battle-weary soldier appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

LIST: Felix Scholz’s 5 favourite stories of 2018

For this year’s instalment of the T+T version of “these are a few of my favourite things”, I’m going to substitute noodles, poodles, and brown paper packages tied up with string for videos. Russell Crowe talks exclusively to us about the … ContinuedThe post LIST: Felix Scholz’s 5 favourite stories of 2018 appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

OPINION: Regrets, I’ve had a few - how to handle buyer’s remorse

I think we’ve all found ourselves in a similar situation to this before: you wake up, the morning after a big night out and all is seemingly well. At least until the night’s events start trickling back into your mind’s eye, and an odd sensation begins to stir deep down inside, giving you the feeling … ContinuedThe post OPINION: Regrets, I’ve had a few – how to handle buyer’s remorse appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

Forget Bond, Bourne and Ethan Hunt, the greatest spy in the history of the silver screen is English, Johnny English. A secret agent of incomparable style, questionable grace and entirely accidental lethality, played to perfection by the thinking man’s action star Rowan Atkinson. In October, English will return to the screen for the third time, … ContinuedThe post WATCHSPOTTING: Ever wondered what watch cinema’s greatest spy wears …  appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.
