Porsche Design Chronograph 1 Utility: The Second Act of a Trilogy Worth Watching

The Porsche Design Chronograph 1 Utility is the second limited-edition collaboration with Hodinkee, and it brings the central-minute chronograph back where it belongs.

Porsche Design and Hodinkee are back together, and this time they've called it the Chronograph 1 Utility. It's the second piece in a planned trilogy of limited-edition collaborations between the two brands, and the name tells you exactly what they were going for. Utility. No fuss, no excess, just a tool chronograph that leans hard into what made the original Chronograph 1 so compelling in the first place.

The headline detail is the central-minute chronograph hand. That sounds simple, but it matters. The classic Porsche Design Chronograph 1 layout put elapsed minutes at the center of the dial, which is more intuitive to read at a glance than a subdial setup. This watch brings that configuration back, and pairs it with a COSC-certified movement developed in-house: the Porsche Design WERK 01.340.

This isn't a re-skin of something you've seen before. The WERK 01.340 is a proper chronograph caliber, and getting COSC certification on it means it's been independently verified for accuracy. That's a commitment worth noting, especially on a limited-edition piece where it would've been easy to cut corners and let the story carry the sale.

What's Actually New Here

The central-minute display is the core design decision, and everything else orbits around it. The Chronograph 1 Utility is built around the philosophy of legibility first. You glance at the dial, you know how much time has elapsed, you get back to whatever you were doing. That's the point.

The "Utility" framing also signals a specific aesthetic direction. Expect a functional, no-nonsense dial layout without decorative flourishes that would undercut the purpose-built character. Porsche Design has always played in that space where industrial design meets watchmaking, and this collaboration leans into that identity rather than softening it for a broader audience.

WristBuzz Take

Porsche Design calling this a "trilogy" is a smart move. It creates commitment on both sides and gives collectors a reason to follow the whole arc rather than cherry-pick. The question is whether chapter three can top this one.

Who This Is For

You probably already know if this watch is for you. If you've been watching the Porsche Design and Hodinkee relationship since the first collaboration, you're already paying attention. If you're drawn to chronographs with genuine heritage and a movement story behind them, the WERK 01.340 with COSC certification gives you something real to hold onto.

This isn't a watch for someone who wants subtle. The Chronograph 1 Utility has a point of view. It references the original 1972 Chronograph 1 by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, which was one of the first all-black titanium sports watches ever made. That lineage carries weight, and wearing this thing is a statement about appreciating that history.

How It Compares

Stacking the Chronograph 1 Utility against other retro-leaning limited chronographs, a few things stand out. The in-house movement with COSC certification is a genuine differentiator. A lot of limited-edition collaborations at this level rely on proven third-party ebauches. Nothing wrong with that, but it's a different conversation. Here, Porsche Design is putting its own caliber on the table and asking it to meet an independent accuracy standard. That's confidence.

The central-minute layout also separates it from the crowded field of subdial-heavy sport chronographs. It's a more specialized readout, and if you've ever timed something in the field and had to mentally convert a subdial reading, you'll appreciate why that distinction matters.

Compared to the first Hodinkee collaboration, the Utility name and direction suggest a slight pivot toward functional credibility over pure collector appeal. Whether the execution delivers on that positioning is something you'll want to see in person before deciding.

The Porsche Design Chronograph 1 Utility is available as a limited edition through Hodinkee. If the first collaboration sold out quickly, don't assume you have time to think this one over. These tend to move fast, and trilogy pieces have a way of becoming regrets for people who waited too long.
