Introducing: The Jacob & Co. The Godfather II - The Only Double-Melody Musical Watch In The World

The Jacob & Co. The Godfather II is not the first Godfather-themed watch, but it is the first and only double-melody musical timepiece in the world. Yes, Blancpain recently revealed the Double Grande Sonnerie, but that’s a striking watch, and The Godfather II is not. Instead, Jacob & Co. built a timepiece with a single […] Visit Introducing: The Jacob & Co. The Godfather II - The Only Double-Melody Musical Watch In The World to read the full article.

Qian GuoBiao’s New Skylight Models Might Just Be My Favorite Watches From Him Yet

There’s something very satisfying about seeing a watchmaker push a familiar idea a little further without losing the thing that made it appealing in the first place. That was my first reaction to the new Qian GuoBiao Skylight Original and Skylight Sun. On paper, the concept is simple enough. This is Qian GuoBiao’s first partially […] Visit Qian GuoBiao’s New Skylight Models Might Just Be My Favorite Watches From Him Yet to read the full article.

Bonniksen Reborn with Handmade Le Carrousel

Bonniksen makes its debut with the aptly named Le Carrousel, a 30-second carrousel wristwatch that will launch under the secondary banner of Naissance d’une Montre 4, which means it will be fully handmade. Le Carrousel’s completion date has not been announced, but good things take time, especially when made without the assistance of automated machinery. Left to right: Bonniksen co-founder and CEO Jason Chevrolat, Greubel Forsey CEO Michel Nydeggar, Bonniksen co-founder Maximin Chapuis, and David Bernard from the Time Æon Foundation. Initial thoughts It’s shaping up to be a big year for independent watchmaking, with a number of new and old names making their debuts. Bonniksen is among the latter, and looks to be a good-faith effort to do justice to the legacy of the inventor of the carrousel. While the rebirth of an old name is a familiar (if not tiresome) formula, one can’t help but appreciate the care with which the name of Bonniken makes its return. For one thing, the movement, which still exists only in sketches and models, is a true carrousel, built to co-founder Maximin Chapuis’ design after 5,500 hours of technical research. In other words, it’s not just an old name attached to an off-the-shelf calibre. The fact that it will debut as a Montre 4 in the Naissance d’une Montre project is another reason to take the effort seriously. If that weren’t enough, the brand has apparently been given the blessing of Bonniksen’s living descendants, which helps t...

Happy birthday, Raymond Weil. This year, the independent, family-owned Geneva-based brand celebrates its 50th anniversary in great horological style. The brand managed to get its hands on 50 historic Valjoux 23-6 chronograph movements, restored and hand-decorated them, and put them inside a Millesime watch. The ABCs of Time – The Five Most Complicated Wristwatches Ever Made

When I think of an affordable complicated watch, something like the Longines Master Collection Chrono Moonphase comes to mind with a full calendar, chronograph, moon phase and 24-hour time (as a day/night indicator). That’s amateur level, however, when it comes to grand complications and the five most complicated watches on this list of this ABCs […]

Into The Pacific With The Blancpain × Swatch Scuba Fifty Fathoms Ocean Of Storms

The Scuba Fifty Fathoms Ocean of Storms is a wonderful holiday watch. Providing a mechanical caliber and the wearing experience of a Blancpain, this Swatch is a whole lot of fun. It’s good that this plasticky watch has a decent level of waterproofness too. Sydney’s spring has been a tempestuous affair to say the least. Reawakening The Gentleman In Us: The New Tissot Gentleman 38mm

Our times aren’t ideally characterized by the term “gentlemanliness.” It seems most of us are more concerned with fighting for what we think the world owes us than with standing for dignified, gentlemanly conduct. This week, I am proposing a return of the gentleman in us all. I secretly, subliminally started last week with the […] Visit Reawakening The Gentleman In Us: The New Tissot Gentleman 38mm to read the full article.

Taking A 20-Year-Old IWC Aquatimer 2000 Into The Ocean

There’s a particular stillness that settles in just before a freedive. One last breath, a quiet pause, and then the surface tension breaks as you slip beneath the water. Along the Pacific coastline of Sydney, where rocky shelves drop quickly into deep green-blue water, that moment feels both calm and demanding. It’s in these conditions […] Visit Taking A 20-Year-Old IWC Aquatimer 2000 Into The Ocean to read the full article.
