Which watches hold their value best?

Steel sports watches from Patek Philippe (Nautilus, Aquanaut), Audemars Piguet (Royal Oak), and Rolex (Daytona, Submariner, GMT-Master II). Plus select A. Lange & Söhne (Lange 1, Datograph) and F.P. Journe. Most everything else loses 30-50% of retail value in 2-3 years.

The tier-1 holders

Rolex Daytona 116500LN / 126500LN: 1.5-2x retail consistently for 10+ years. Patek Nautilus 5711/1A (discontinued 2021): 3-5x retail at peak. AP Royal Oak Jumbo 16202: 1.5-2x retail. Patek Aquanaut 5167A: 2-3x retail. Rolex GMT-Master II 'Pepsi' / 'Batman': 1.3-1.7x retail. Rolex Submariner 126610LN: ~retail or slightly below at grey market. These are the five-or-six references where 'investment-grade' is genuinely defensible.

The strong tier

A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 / Datograph: 30-50% above retail at certain configurations. F.P. Journe Chronomètre Souverain: doubles retail over 5 years. Vacheron Constantin Overseas: ~retail or slight premium. Patek Calatrava 5227 / 5196: holds retail well. Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch: retains 70-80% of retail (vs typical 50%). These watches don't appreciate dramatically but resist the depreciation that hits the broader market.

The depreciation trap

Most chronographs CHF 3,000-15,000 (TAG Heuer Carrera, IWC Pilot Chronograph, Breitling Premier non-LE): lose 40-60% in 3-5 years. Most quartz luxury: lose 70%+. Limited editions outside the Top 10 brands: typically lose value as buzz fades. Hublot Big Bang non-LE: 50-70% loss. Modern complications outside haute brands: depreciate predictably. The principle: brand equity, supply constraint, and cultural momentum matter more than complication or finishing for value retention.

What predicts retention

Three factors. Supply constraint (the brand deliberately produces below demand): every Top 10 holder has it. Cultural anchor reference (the watch IS the brand for many buyers): Submariner = Rolex, Nautilus = modern Patek, etc. Resale liquidity (active grey market with clear pricing): you can actually sell within weeks. References without all three depreciate. See vintage market boom.
