HANDS-ON: Raymond Weil’s latest Freelancer Chronograph looks the business

Raymond Weil’s latest take on their sporty Freelancer Chronograph is – to be blunt – really good-looking. Fundamentally, it’s the same as Freelancer chronos we’ve seen before: 42mm steel case, bulletproof RW500 movement, 12,6,9 subdial layout, day/date and screw-down crown and pushers. It’s a solid piece of kit. What’s new, though, is the colour way. Silver … ContinuedThe post HANDS-ON: Raymond Weil’s latest Freelancer Chronograph looks the business appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

WATCHSPOTTING: Ozark’s Jason Bateman continues to live his best vintage Rolex Daytona life

In a clip produced by Vanity Fair to coincide with the release of Ozark Season 2 on Netflix, Jason Bateman, Laura Linney and Julia Garner explain Ozark ‘hillbilly’ slang. We’re sure you’ll agree that they all play second fiddle to the 1979 Rolex Daytona hanging casually from Bateman’s wrist throughout. It’s not the first time we’ve spotted it on Bateman … ContinuedThe post WATCHSPOTTING: Ozark’s Jason Bateman continues to live his best vintage Rolex Daytona life appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

HANDS-ON: Sun and sea combined – the Seiko Prospex ‘Save The Ocean’ SSC675P

What do whales, chronographs and solar charging have in common? And no, I’m not talking about a hypothetical scheme involving Elon Musk, and the launching of an around the world race, with solar-powered propellers attached to specially trained whales. Cool as that may be – although probably not humane – all three things become one in … ContinuedThe post HANDS-ON: Sun and sea combined – the Seiko Prospex ‘Save The Ocean’ SSC675P appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

SPOTTED! BY AG: Dispatch 13, August 2018

This month was an interesting one as far as spotting goes, including an unexpected Rolex Submariner, a rare vintage Tudor, an obscure Heuer chronograph, and a very special limited edition Autavia - amongst others. Let’s get cracking. In case you missed it, this month Time+Tide hosted an Autavia Collectors’ Lunch, here in Melbourne. Guest speaker David … ContinuedThe post SPOTTED! EDITOR’S PICK: An ultra-cool Speedy with orange details? It’s the Omega Speedmaster Racing of course

Editor’s note: A few months ago the watch-loving world went a little nuts for the Speedmaster Ultraman. Many (many) people missed out on copping it, but if your love of retro orange highlights still burns strong, how about this automatic alternative? And while there’s a black dial on offer that looks even more ultra, we’re … ContinuedThe post EDITOR’S PICK: An ultra-cool Speedy with orange details? WHO TO FOLLOW: @Creodesignwatches – the dial artist

Chris Alexander, also known as Creo Design, is a professional artist and designer who has worked across multiple media, with a focus for watch dial art. Hi Chris, what’s your daily watch and why? HANDS-ON: The TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 5 Day-Date

It’s easy to think of the Carrera as purely a collection of chronographs, as that complication is where its roots and, indeed, heart lies. But for a long time the TAG Heuer Carrera has been about more than just sports timers. It’s evolved into something more, a shorthand for sports pedigree and precision. This is … ContinuedThe post HANDS-ON: The TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 5 Day-Date appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

HANDS-ON: The TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre Heuer 01 in black ceramic – 55 years on and still going strong

They say your 50s are the new 30s. I’m not sure who ‘they’ are, and why exactly they say that. But just Google “celebrities in their 50s” and you’ll see that maybe they are on to something (Halle Berry and Tom Cruise, amirite?). Well, this year marks 55 years of the TAG Heuer Carrera, and … ContinuedThe post HANDS-ON: The TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre Heuer 01 in black ceramic – 55 years on and still going strong appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

IN-DEPTH: Colour comes to play with the TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 Chronograph

The story in a second: Classic Carrera. More colour. If you spend more than a few minutes in the sometimes crazy world of watches, it’s easy to lose perspective. You can very quickly get caught up in the hullabaloo of new this, in-house that, and proprietary the other. But while all that stuff is cool … ContinuedThe post IN-DEPTH: Colour comes to play with the TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 Chronograph appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

SPOTTED! BY AG: Dispatch 12, July 2018 – A Heuer-heavy edition

This month was an interesting one, and, as you’ll see, jam-packed with one particular brand. I’ll put this Heuer-overload down to the fact I spent quite a bit of time with local car enthusiasts, who have a lot of time for the brand - especially their chronographs. Let’s kick things off. Local gent Charith recently picked up … ContinuedThe post SPOTTED! BY AG: Dispatch 12, July 2018 – A Heuer-heavy edition appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

IN-DEPTH: Luxury sports done right – the Zenith Defy Classic Skeleton

The story in a second:  Contemporary design and classic size make this a winning combination. It’s no secret that the Defy is Zenith’s darling this year. Baselworld 2018 saw them release a swag of different versions, including the crazy Zero G, the impressive chronograph, and this watch, the comparatively simple Classic. And while it may … ContinuedThe post IN-DEPTH: Luxury sports done right – the Zenith Defy Classic Skeleton appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

The framing here is frankly a bit off. A chronograph is hardly the most-engineered complication in Swiss watchmaking; that crown belongs to perpetual calendars and minute repeaters. That said, the automatic chronograph remains the most *accessible* complicated movement for volume producers, and that's a worthier claim. The 1969 reference is apt, though the real innovation happened years before.
    1. Ben W. replying to C. Almeida
Fair correction on the engineering hierarchy. But I'd add: the "accessibility" angle gets muddied fast once you're actually trying to buy one. A Daytona or even a Tudor Chrono sits behind waitlists and AD games that make "accessible" feel like marketing speak. The movement's elegant, sure, but the secondary market lottery around these watches tells a different story about what buyers actually face.

thinking about getting my first chrono and this helped a lot. is a vintage automatic worth learning on or should i just grab something new first. also how much should i realistically spend.
    1. WristBuzz Team replying to Reece
This all depends on your own feelings and what you like to spend. Pretty hard to answer imho.
