MY WEEK WITH: The Montblanc TimeWalker Chronograph

A few weeks ago I had the distinct honour and pleasure of spending some time with Montblanc (and 50 or so other watch journalists) in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Now, prior to booking flights I had a decidedly foggy understanding of where Jackson Hole was and what it was all about (not coastal, mountains). And while … ContinuedThe post MY WEEK WITH: The Montblanc TimeWalker Chronograph appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

IN-DEPTH: Smart and stealthy – the TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer 01 43mm in black ceramic

Story in a second: It’s one of the best modern sports chronographs of 2017. ’Nuff said. In two short years, TAG Heuer’s Carrera Heuer 01 has gone from a single statement model to a fully fledged sub-collection, with something for everyone. Having said that, this stealthy, slightly smaller 43mm in matt black ceramic might just … ContinuedThe post IN-DEPTH: Smart and stealthy – the TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer 01 43mm in black ceramic appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

HANDS-ON: Smooth sailing – the Panerai Luminor 1950 PCYC 3 Days Chrono Flyback

In recent years, Panerai has changed tack - steering a little away from the purely hard-edged, masculine image that has characterised the brand’s more recent history with models like the Luminor Due and this flyback chronograph, made to celebrate Panerai’s partnership with the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge, or PCYC. For a brand that was born … ContinuedThe post HANDS-ON: Smooth sailing – the Panerai Luminor 1950 PCYC 3 Days Chrono Flyback  appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

If, like us, you are madly into watches, then you’ve had today’s date marked in your calendar for the past few months. Yes, the 26th of October is the day (in America) that Phillips auction off Paul Newman’s actual Paul Newman Daytona. VIDEO: Play of light – Raymond Weil’s Freelancer Chronograph

There’s a reason chronographs are one of the most perennially popular watch complications – they add a lot to a watch. Functionality, interesting design elements, and a sense of derring-do, thanks to the chronograph’s close association with the exciting and glamorous worlds of motorsports, aviation and general athletic endeavour. Most importantly though, they add a … ContinuedThe post VIDEO: Play of light – Raymond Weil’s Freelancer Chronograph appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

INSIGHT: 3 questions about Paul Newman’s Rolex Daytona, answered

When I had the opportunity, in Geneva this past summer, to get my hands on the 20th century’s most famous wristwatch and talk about it with the man who will be holding the hammer when the watch is auctioned by Phillips in New York in a few days, my immediate thought was I-love-my-job-I’m-so-lucky. Followed by … ContinuedThe post INSIGHT: 3 questions about Paul Newman’s Rolex Daytona, answered appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

HANDS-ON: The Montblanc TimeWalker Chronograph in red gold with brown dial

Last week, I was in the mountain town of Jackson, Wyoming with Montblanc. And while I’ll have to wait until SIHH 2018 to share most of the watches I’ve seen with you (totally worth it, by the way), I did spot one smooth new variation of this year’s sporty TimeWalker Chronograph that I can tell you … ContinuedThe post HANDS-ON: The Montblanc TimeWalker Chronograph in red gold with brown dial appeared first on Time+Tide Watches.

The framing here is frankly a bit off. A chronograph is hardly the most-engineered complication in Swiss watchmaking; that crown belongs to perpetual calendars and minute repeaters. That said, the automatic chronograph remains the most *accessible* complicated movement for volume producers, and that's a worthier claim. The 1969 reference is apt, though the real innovation happened years before.

Fair correction on the engineering hierarchy. But I'd add: the "accessibility" angle gets muddied fast once you're actually trying to buy one. A Daytona or even a Tudor Chrono sits behind waitlists and AD games that make "accessible" feel like marketing speak. The movement's elegant, sure, but the secondary market lottery around these watches tells a different story about what buyers actually face.

thinking about getting my first chrono and this helped a lot. is a vintage automatic worth learning on or should i just grab something new first. also how much should i realistically spend.
    1. WristBuzz Team replying to Reece
This all depends on your own feelings and what you like to spend. Pretty hard to answer imho.
