Why tourbillons matter (and don't)
The tourbillon was patented by Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1801 to average gravity errors in a vertical-position pocket watch. On the wrist (where the watch tilts constantly through every gravity orientation), the practical accuracy benefit is essentially zero. Tourbillons in 2026 are bought for the visual drama and the watchmaking-prestige argument.
Pricing has fallen dramatically: the cheapest legitimate Swiss tourbillon was ~€80k in 2010, ~€20k in 2018, and the TAG Heuer Carrera Tourbillon hit ~€15k in 2024. The high end remains where it was: Breguet, Patek, Lange, AP all run €150-400k for their tourbillon references.
The reference modern Breguet tourbillon.
Breguet's Classique Tourbillon uses the in-house Cal. 581 ultra-thin tourbillon (3mm thick), 80-hour reserve. Hand-engraved guilloché dial, blued steel hands. The watchmaking-purist tourbillon answer.
German tourbillon with stop-seconds + zero-reset.
Lange's 1815 Tourbillon uses the manual Cal. L102.1 with patented stop-seconds and zero-reset mechanism (the seconds hand jumps to zero when the crown is pulled, so you can sync precisely). Hand-engraved balance cock.
The Royal Oak with the tourbillon at 6.
AP's Royal Oak Selfwinding Tourbillon uses the Cal. 2950 with peripheral oscillating mass, so the tourbillon is unobstructed. Self-winding flying tourbillon at the price tier.
Patek's classical tourbillon expression.
Patek's 5337G is the brand's classical Calatrava-cased tourbillon, Cal. 215 PS hand-wound, hand-engraved tourbillon cage. The Patek tourbillon-on-the-back tradition (visible only through the caseback).
Vertical-axis tourbillon with remontoir.
F.P. Journe's 2019 Tourbillon Souverain Vertical orients the cage axis vertically (perpendicular to the dial), unique in modern production. Includes a remontoir d'égalité for stable amplitude.
25-degree inclined fast-rotation tourbillon.
Greubel Forsey's Tourbillon 24 Secondes inclines the cage at 25 degrees and rotates it every 24 seconds (vs. the standard 60). Patented mechanism.
The classical Vacheron tourbillon.
Vacheron Constantin's Patrimony Tourbillon uses the in-house Cal. 2160 self-winding tourbillon (peripheral rotor). Geneva Hallmark hand-finishing, 80-hour reserve.
In-house tourbillon under €60k.
Frederique Constant's in-house Cal. FC-980 tourbillon is the most accessible Geneva-made manufacture tourbillon. 79-hour reserve, partial dial cutout showing the cage.
World-record-thin tourbillon.
Bvlgari's Octo Finissimo Tourbillon held the world's-thinnest-tourbillon record at launch. Cal. BVL 268, 1.95mm thin. Titanium case.
